"Oh, grab that over there!" Akira said with a grin as she pointed to a half buried chunk of metal that, to Anastasia's eye, looked like a car engine that a giant took a bite out of. Ana looked at her friend, but Akira was already wipe sand off of a large, flat sheet of metal. Ana shrugged and then grabbed the 'car engine' that was buried in the sand. She took a deep breath and heaved!
Only for the sand to shift and she lost all leverage and fell over face planting into the sand. She sat up and spat out gritty sand with her face squinched at the taste of the beach front. She shook her head free of sand to look over at the sound of laughter coming from Akira who had managed to view the entire debacle. Anastasia gave Akira a flat stare and then flipped her off, which only encouraged more laughter. Ana rolled her eyes internally and then picked herself up from the ground.
She tilted her head and assessed the best leverage points on the hunk of debris, and then, after a moment to find firm footing, Anastasia pulled the salvage free from the sand. Sand fell from the crevasses like water, piling on the ground in little mounds. Ana turned and lugged the machine over to the large hover truck that Akira had brought specifically for the occasion and placed the machinery in the flat bed.
Dusting off her hands Anastasia returned to Akira's side and looked around the sandy shore and the other detritus strewn about, "What is this anyway, Akira?"
"PTO survey cruiser," she said with out looking up from the edge of a hunk of metal that was twisted and partially melted, "Shot down by the EDF. They'll probably be here soon enough for the scrap, but that's why we need to move fast."
"Why are you collecting scrap metal from a Trade ship?"
Akira looked up at Anastasia, pushing her goggles back on her head, "Because even the PTO's most basic ships have advances that ours don't. Take this sheet of metal I got here. It's some sort of synthetic alloy that I've never seen before. I'm not even sure what it's made of, much less how they fashioned it. It's thin and light, but check out these burns here? That's not from falling through our atmosphere. These were concentrated laser blasts."
Anastasia looked closer at the metal that Akira held up, but to her untrained eye it looked like the same old wreckage that could be found at any car accident, much less from a space ship. Ana reached out and touched the burns with her finger tips, and then pulled her hand back, examining the burnt residue, "If you say so..."
"Yeah, well," Akira shrugged and hefted up the chunk of metal, or at least she tried. Anastasia reached out wordlessly and took the sheet from her, "Even if I don't learn anything cool from is, this stuff is worth a butt load of money. So, there's that at least."
"So, you'll be able to pay me then?" Anastasia asked while placing the scrap in the truck alongside the rest of it.
"Yeah, yeah, " Akira said with a dismissive wave of her hand. They both knew that Anastasia didn't really need or care about the money. It was more a game between the two of them, a long standing one. Akira would jokingly call Anastasia slave labor, Ana would threaten to drop whatever scrap she had on Akira. It was an odd companionship. But it worked for the two of them.
BWOOP BWOOP!
"Oop, here they come," Akira looked up at the flashing lights as the EDF's salvage crews came in. Poaching wreckage was... frowned upon, to say the least, "Let's beat it, Ana!"
Anastasia looked up at the approaching hover cars, and then nodded her head at Akira. They both jumped into Akira's truck, Anastasia could escape from them easily by flying, but she wouldn't be able to carry all of Akira's scrap, which would defeat the purpose of the trip if they left it behind. Akira gunned the engine to life and took off like a bullet.
"Can you distract them?" Akira asked Anastasia when two of the salvage crew's cars pulled away from the pack to chase after them.
Ana looked back at the cars and thought about it. She didn't want to hurt anyone... she should be able to stop them with little effort and damage to the drivers inside. Finally she nodded to Akira, "Yes."
"Good! Meet me back at Echo Road?" Akira said in reference to one of her work shops on the edge of town. Anastasia knew the location and gave Akira a nod of confirmation. She then opened the door and rolled out of the car, taking to the sky before even hitting the ground.
With Akira still driving away, Anastasia flew up to the first of the hover cars and caught it in her hands, slowing it rather than stopping it to limit the amount of damage to the people inside. Anastasia lifted a hand and gave a little wave to the surprised occupants inside and then punched through the hood of the car and ripped out handfuls of machinery till the hover vehicle fell to the ground with a heavy crash.
"Sorry," she said with a little shrug and then blasted off after the second vehicle that was gaining on Akira's truck. It may have been creeping up on Akira, but it had no chance of escaping Anastasia. She caught the hover car by the back and pulled, causing the propulsion system to whir loudly in trying to compensate for Anastasia's grip.
The car didn't stand a chance as Ana lifted it up and ripped out several pieces from the hover jets, causing them to sputter and die. She dropped the car to the ground and when the driver stuck his head out the window to gape at her, Anastasia shrugged, a wordless 'sorry'.
Taking one last look around her to make sure there weren't any other people in pursuit of her friend, Anastasia summoned her ki and took to the skies, flying in a loop around town before making her way to Akira's work shop in Echo Road.
